2nd European Technology assessment - TA Conference
This European conference aimed at taking stock of and supporting exchange on TA capacities available in Europe was organized in the framework of the FP7 funded project “Parliaments and Civil Society in Technology Assessment” (PACITA) http://www.pacitaproject.eu/.
PACITA is a four-year project aimed at increasing the capacity and enhancing the institutional basis for knowledge-based policy-making on issues involving science, technology and innovation, mainly based upon the diversity of practices in ParliamentaryTechnology Assessment in Europe (PTA). Such practices involve a range of methods of cross-disciplinary expert studies, stakeholder involvement, citizen consultation and parliamentary discourse. A major aim of PACITA is to spread knowledge on technology assessment and similar activities to areas of Europe currently unfamiliar with them.
This conference has been a unique opportunity for us to discuss with key European and other international experts about participatory tools and methods used to dialogue with the civil society about controversial and new emerging technologies, their advantages but also risks. These various techniques, their use and results have been studied in WP2 of the SecurePART project and the most efficient ones selected. They may help in increasing understanding and acceptance of security technologies.
